Description
Mazda's sports car, the RX-7, was in its third-generation by 1993, 15 years after its debut. Made in Mazda's Hiroshima assembly plant in March 1992, this example is a three-owner car. The third owner bought it in September 2014 and about 3,000 miles have been added, car had 69,xxx miles at the time. Clean car fax show two prior owners and no accidents.
Dressed in Vintage Red (code NU), the car's paint and trim are in overall very good order. The bodywork is straight and solid, the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is very tidy. The windows have been tinted. However, there's a small dent on the passenger-side rocker panel.
This car rolls on new Hankook Ventus V2 radials, size 225/50R16 at all our corners. Each one is mounted to a factory alloy wheel. Some of the wheels bear scratches.
Under the hood is a 1.3L, turbocharged, twin-rotor Wankel rotary engine (code 13B-REW) with a K&N air filter. The turbos were operated sequentially, with only the primary providing boost until 4,500 rpm and the secondary additionally coming online afterwards. Notably, this was the world's first volume-production sequential turbocharger system. Backing up the motor is a five-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks and power sideview mirrors. In September 2021 the car received an oil and filter change.
Inside, the black leather interior is overall very good shape. The front buckets show some minor wear on the seats and the shift knob shows wear. The black carpet and headliner complement the seats and there's a three-spoke steering wheel. The inner door liners and dashboard are in overall great shape. Some of the trim bits are wrapped in carbon fiber. A console-mounted shifter and an aftermarket infotainment system.
At launch, three option packages were offered; the "base," the Touring and the R1. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, and a four-speed automatic was available on the base model and Touring package. The Touring package included a glass moonroof, fog lights, leather seats, a rear window wiper and a Bose Acoustic Wave music system with CD player. The R1 model featured upgraded springs, Bilstein shocks, an additional engine oil cooler, an aerodynamics package comprising a front lip and rear wing, suede seats. Documentation includes owner's manual.
Competition to this Mazda in 1993 included Acura's NSX, Chevrolet's Corvette, Dodge's Stealth R/T, Ferrari's 348 TB, Lexus' SC300, Mitsubishi's 3000VR, Nissan's 300ZX Turbo, Porsche's 911 Carrera 4 and Toyota's Supra Turbo.
