Description

For bid is an original November 19, 1902 presentation plaque from the Commercial Club of Kansas City, Missouri presented to Captain Andrew Summers Rowan, USA (Army officer).  This plaque comes with the original leather and purple silk presentation box!
Captain Andrew S. Rowan was the main character of the Elbert Hubbard essay printed by Roycrofters Press in New York in 1899.  He was considered a Spanish-American War hero though aspects of the essay's authenticity have been called into question.  Hubbard's essay was EXTREMELY popular.  Rowan was stationed in the Philippines Islands in the Philippine War (finishing his service there in May 1902).  He had been stationed at Kansas State Agricultural College (Kansas State) in Manhattan, Kansas to teach military tactics to ROTC students.  He was serving there when this award was presented at a dinner in Kansas City in Missouri.
The sterling silver plaque is in its original presentation box.  The silver bar is marked "STERLING" on the back and weighs approximately 170 grams of .925 silver.  The words are incised in the plaque in fancy, Edwardian fonts.  Box is covered in leather or leatherette material.  Purple silk inside the box.
